Gebhard J. Selz (University of Vienna, Austria) “The Invention of Writing and the Mesopotamian World View”

The lecture will demonstrate that the invention of writing in the Ancient Near East led to major changes in the epistemic world of Mesopotamia and beyond. It will also show that written tradition preserves only the surface of scholarly reasoning. In a final step the lecture will ask what the models developed by modern interpretations of the Ancient Near Eastern written sources contribute to other sectors of “Oriental Studies”.
