Jakub Kuciak (University of Jagiellonia, Kraków, Poland) “Myth and Genealogy in Service of Politics on Example of Euripides’ Tragedy Ion”

Abstract:

The author analyzes the Euripidean tragedy Ion. In this article an attempt is made to explain some important elements, such as the date when the play could have been staged and the political situation in Athens in that time. The essential questions were the mythical and genealogical innovations in this tragedy. The author looks for sources of these innovations and their influence on the propaganda meaning of Ion. Regarding the problem of the date when the tragedy was staged, there are some additional methodological remarks. Very helpful in that chapter were the auxiliary sources, such as another literary sources and epigraphical sources.
